These screws use a bugle head to sit flush with the surface of the wood, providing a clean look. Each screw features a Type 17 slash point for fast starts and no pre-drilling required for wood decking. Our CAMO screws feature a proprietary epoxy-based coating designed for excellent corrosion resistance. This coating is often ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) compatible, making it suitable for use with pressure-treated lumber.
The coating helps prevent rust and degradation of the screw over time, ensuring the longevity of the deck. On the inside, CAMO screws are made with durable 316 stainless steel for maximum corrosion resistance.
If you’re working with advanced composite deck boards, you need fasteners engineered specifically for these materials. The overall design of these screws minimizes surface distortion and provides excellent corrosion resistance throughout the lifespan of a composite deck.
Unlike wood screws, composite screws often feature smaller, countersinking heads (like trim heads or undercut heads) designed to create a clean, flush finish. This prevents “mushrooming” or distortion in the composite material’s surface as the auger digs into the material. These screws are color matched with an epoxy coating and have a countersink thread to hold deck boards down and blend seamlessly into the floor of your deck.
These are used with composite screws to conceal the fastener attachment point with a color- and pattern-matched cover. For homeowners seeking a cleaner, more polished look, visible fasteners can detract from the overall appearance of a high-quality deck. While our composite screws can be ordered in multiple hues, having a flush, color-matched plug helps completely conceal the fasteners.
While primarily aesthetic, plugs also offer help to seal screw holes. This can reduce the amount of water and debris that can accumulate around the screw head over time. Adding plugs contributes to a longer lifespan for your fasteners by increasing the corrosion resistance of the screws themselves. They may come at an extra cost, but a better-looking and better-performing deck is always worth the investment!
Instead of directly securing into your deck with wood or composite screws, hidden fasteners can provide the security you need without drilling into a single board! The Deck Supply has a wide range of options to choose the right fastener for your project. Let’s take a look at two of our most popular options.
A classic entry-level hidden fastener system is one of the most flexible options for those new to hidden fasteners. Using small aluminum clips, Tiger Claw connectors secure the connection by screwing into the underlying framework rather than the board itself. With options for grooved, hardwood, and PVC decking, Tiger Claw is one of the most versatile hidden fasteners!
These hidden fasteners conceal connections by driving screws through the side of a board, instead of through the face of the board. With fasteners designed for wood, metal, and universal applications, the CAMO Edge line creates a strong connection for any deck. To install these fasteners properly, you’ll need a Camo Drive or Marksman Pro tool.
“What fasteners do I use for building my deck?”
When fastening deck boards to joists, the most common type of fastener is an #8 2.5” coated screw. Other deck hardware may be necessary for framing and other deck systems like railing.
“Is it better to nail or screw a deck?”
For deck hardware, screws are the superior choice over nails. They secure your deck materials and can prevent warping, especially for wood decking. Also, screws are easy to remove for deck maintenance without causing any damage.
“Should I pre-drill holes for deck screws?”
It’s unnecessary to pre-drill holes for deck hardware like screws, but most professionals recommend it. If you choose to have your deck installed by our expert team, this is a practice we will use.
“Should I screw deck boards to every joist?”
To ensure the stability and durability of your deck, you should fasten every board with two screws at each point that it crosses a joist. This can prevent warping and other wear and tear from foot traffic and furniture.
