Screws at a Glance

Wood Screws 

These screws use a bugle head to sit flush with the surface of the wood, providing a clean look. Each screw features a Type 17 slash point for fast starts and no pre-drilling required for wood decking. Our CAMO screws feature a proprietary epoxy-based coating designed for excellent corrosion resistance. This coating is often ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quaternary) compatible, making it suitable for use with pressure-treated lumber. 

The coating helps prevent rust and degradation of the screw over time, ensuring the longevity of the deck. On the inside, CAMO screws are made with durable 316 stainless steel for maximum corrosion resistance.

Composite Deck Screws

If you’re working with advanced composite deck boards, you need fasteners engineered specifically for these materials. The overall design of these screws minimizes surface distortion and provides excellent corrosion resistance throughout the lifespan of a composite deck.

Unlike wood screws, composite screws often feature smaller, countersinking heads (like trim heads or undercut heads) designed to create a clean, flush finish. This prevents “mushrooming” or distortion in the composite material’s surface as the auger digs into the material. These screws are color matched with an epoxy coating and have a countersink thread to hold deck boards down and blend seamlessly into the floor of your deck.

Plugs 

These are used with composite screws to conceal the fastener attachment point with a color- and pattern-matched cover. For homeowners seeking a cleaner, more polished look, visible fasteners can detract from the overall appearance of a high-quality deck. While our composite screws can be ordered in multiple hues, having a flush, color-matched plug helps completely conceal the fasteners. 

While primarily aesthetic, plugs also offer help to seal screw holes. This can reduce the amount of water and debris that can accumulate around the screw head over time. Adding plugs contributes to a longer lifespan for your fasteners by increasing the corrosion resistance of the screws themselves. “What fasteners do I use for building my deck?”

When fastening deck boards to joists, the most common type of fastener is an #8 2.5” coated screw. Other deck hardware may be necessary for framing and other deck systems like railing.

“Is it better to nail or screw a deck?”
